Happy 20s New Year

Happy 20s New Year
1/20
A recreation of "Happy New Year", originally created in January 2014. I will post that at the bottom :)

This image is part of a new 2020 series.
I've had this idea for a few years knowing 2020 was coming. I am going to "redo" 20 of my photos this year. Some will be like this where I just redo it with a new idea/theme relevant to 2020, others will call attention to how we have aged/grown, and some will just be downright laughable
Fun notes about this image:
1.This dress is from 1995 when I was on drill team and we did a flapper/20's routine. So not looking for this photo to be era specific, this was just a fun creation, and seriously you had to know I'd do a roaring 20s photo right?
2. Also the confetti is black, silver, and gold, but then I changed the image to full black/white, a little bummed that detail was lost.
3. This was the third photo I took....and I ended up taking 53...without a remote....running back and forth...53 times...for me to choose frame 3! lol
4. I made a You Tube video about this image. Check it out here. And I will post it below :)

Throwback Monday? Sure why not!

The last two weeks have been really crazy with my portrait business as October is my busiest month of the year :) I have been creating, I just didn't have as much time to edit or post.

I know I create more fine art self portraits now, but my creative fun self portraits are what started me on this journey back in 2011. So I wanted to share some of my October themed self portraits I have done. Well, the ones that are not Ghosts as my Ghost Series is its own thing :)

And stay tuned this week when I share my newest "scary" photo  :)

Enjoy!

Sit and Shoot

2018 Self Portrait

I joined a group that was doing a photo a week for 2018. Figured I could use it as inspiration to create more this year. Although I have an entire binder full of ideas, I usually slack and never get them done.

The first week was "Self Portrait". A little easier for me since I shoot mostly self portraits. So I thought I would have it be more of what my passion is and what would represent me and then go from there. Of course that would be a camera. Since I already did a photo last year where the camera on a tripod and me merged to make one, I thought I would just do something simple. Just me sitting on my camera on a shelf.

So what will I reveal in 2018! Stay Tuned!

The 1970s

We own a 1971 Chevelle, so when we did our 2012 family self portraits, I made sure to do a fun photo with it. (See photo at the end).

Now that it has been 4 years, my boys have grown quite a bit and I thought it was the perfect time to do this photo again. During my planning for this photo I came up with an idea. I would now forward time along with my boys by choosing clothing that would be later in date to what we wore the first time. It's not an exact science and I wasn't looking to be exactly accurate, more in general theme sense. My new idea is to take this photo every 4 years and not only show that my boys have aged 4 years but I will change our styles to match that as well. So in 2020 I will do this photo yet again but with us in early 80's clothing. I'm hoping by 2024 to have 4 really cool photos that will show us going from early 70's to late 80's like a family might have done with a 1971 Chevelle.

Here is my 2016 version :)

Enjoy!

Where is the Matterhorn?

Another older self portrait, but one I never got around to actually editing. Taken at Disneyland back in December 2012.

2012 | Week 50:
Where is the Matterhorn

We visited Disneyland and of course had to do some sort of Disneyland self portrait. Was actually pretty easy to do (which was needed by the end of the full year of self portraits). LOTS of people staring at all. Which I thought was funny because it wasn't like we were that exciting. And we were very lucky that the white rabbit went by when we were doing this as that part was not preplanned :)

TBW | Marilyn Monroe

Today Marilyn Monroe would have been 90 years old. A perfect day to share this older self portrait of mine. Taken in 2011 during my 52 week self portrait project.

Roundup

Roundup

"Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway." - John Wayne

This week will be a blog post about my creative process for this photo rather then a video or slideshow. If you are curious how I created and edited this photo, check out my totem pole photo as I give some of my steps on how I transformed myself into a wood character.

This photo was taken at Boomtown Casino in Reno, Nevada in the arcade amusement area. There are lots of wood statues that decorate and line the arcade. The statues are placed a few feet apart and it really struck me that I could stand in between them and become a statue myself. This type of portrait is in line with the other portraits I have done like this, such as, myself as a statue in front of Caesar's Palace on the Las Vegas strip and my family as a totem pole in Alaska.

When I first saw these statues and came up with this idea, I didn't have any outfits or props with me. However, Reno is one of the places we visit often, so I took some photos and jotted down my idea in a notebook for future reference. If this was a place I was not going to be back in quite some time or was going to be the only chance I got, I could have gone shopping for the items I needed, such as, the bandana and hat. However, knowing that I had those items at home and that Reno was a place I knew I'd be back, I opted to wait it out and do the photo a year later.  Thus, this was an idea I had for quite some time before being able to fully make it happen. So don't be discouraged if you have an idea that you can't make happen right away. It's ok to wait until you find the correct props, attire, location or the timing is just right. Sometimes that can take up to a year or more.

So about a year later, we returned to Reno and this time I brought along some possible Cowboy items and went to the arcade to do this photo.  When I arrived to shoot this photo there were several kids and their parents in the arcade. This is a point where many people would have walked away and not done the photo at all. Some of the best advice I can give you about any type of photography is if you're ever nervous to take a shot, take a deep breath and just do it anyway. First, who cares what others think? Even if they are staring at you, the photo isn't for them, it's for you. Take the shot anyway. Also, if you are not anywhere near home, and even if you are, are you going to see these people again? Most likely not. Last and most important reason is because you will regret that you didn't do it when you had the chance.

I have taken many photos in front of random strangers who are either walking by or gathering while I do a self portrait. I have never left a self portrait shoot feeling really dumb that I finished the shoot while people were watching, but I have stopped shooting before and instantly regretted it. I have always taken this to heart when I do my self portraits. If I have an idea that is very solid and I know what I want to do, especially if I can achieve it in a fairly quick manner then I absolutely go ahead with the self-portrait even if there is an audience. This photo in particular I did get some stares from people who were trying to figure out what I was doing. Plus, some rude people who knew exactly what I was doing and kept trying to walk in front of the camera as the timer went off. But I didn't let them get me down and now I have my creation all complete.

I know I've said this many times during other self portraits but get out of your head and stop worryingly about what anyone else thinks. When I worry about what others think it becomes the number one roadblock for my creativity.   It's a good reminder to remember to take a photo no matter what others may think of your process or possible finished product. Not everyone is going to like me as a wood statue or understand why I wanted to do this sort of photograph. That's ok because I created it for me.

So go out today and create something that you have been holding back on. Whether its because you were nervous to shoot it, scared people might stare or simply because you keep putting it on the back burner.

Go out and create art and create it for yourself :)

Family Totem Pole

Family Totem Pole

Whenever I can incorporate my love for fun creative portraits and vacation, I am all for it.  I knew I wanted my family to be a part of whatever creation I came up with for our Alaska vacation.  I started to think about things that were Alaskan and looked into the histories of the cities we would be visiting. One of the cities we were vising was Ketchikan which has a Totem Pole Park. Perfect. We could be our own totem pole! I came up with a list of a few hats we could wear to make us animals and I made sure to bring those with us.

Info on the edit:

Actually fairly easy to shoot, most of magic came in photoshop. I wanted us to look like we were a wood statue but still like us.

I used layer masks to isolate us so that edits I made only applied to us and nothing else.

I started with running a watercolor action I have. It creates deep dark black lines and really outlines us. I did it at a very low opacity and only used the outline part of it and didn't mess with the color.

I needed us to be brighter and have a more painted look. I created a new layer over us and choose a color that was close to what our actual clothes color was. I used a soft brush and colored over our clothing. Changed that blending mode to Color Dodge. Played with the opacity. Lots of back and forth on this one, tried many colors until getting the right look.

I needed to "paint" our faces to resemble a totem pole. I achieved this by creating a new layer, choosing a color, changed the blending mode to Multiply, then lowered the opacity to my liking.

Last I added a wood texture on top of us. The wood texture I used was a long wavy piece of wood that was taken fairly close up. I changed the blending mode to soft light, and lowering the opacity to about 50% so the wavy wood lines showed but didn't overpower the people.

Groovy | Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday to a self portrait I did in July 2012 with my family.

My husband has a 1971 Chevelle and it gave me the idea for us to dress up for that time era and do a photo with the car. Even 4 years later, its still one of my all time favorite photos.

I have plans to do this photo again this summer! Looking forward to it since my kids have grown so much in the last 4 years!

Throwback Thursday!

2012 | Titanic 100 Year Anniversary

"I'm the king of the world!"

My Dad loves all things Titanic so I grew up with a lot of Titanic type stuff. So when doing my family self portraits back in 2012, I could not let the 100 year anniversary pass without doing something for it!

I built everything you see myself from butcher paper and poster board. I used phone books and chairs to hold it together....but once I got inside the boat I realized I did not allow enough room for my arm to do the pose correctly, and at that point I couldn't move the boat I built, so I am turned slightly.

I shot 43 frames....I choose the very first one :)

Someday

Someday

"Someday I'll find my love...Someone to call my own"

This is one I have had in my queue for far too long. Taken in October 2013 while at Disneyland at one of their Halloween event nights. We went early to the wishing well before the crowds were heavy and had the entire area to ourselves. Which at Disneyland is pretty lucky!

I took several of us around the wishing well but for now this is one that stood out of us as The Prince and Snow White.

Enjoy!

Living Statue

Living Statue
"Be brave enough to live life creatively." - Alan Alda

This photo was part of my 52 week self portrait project I did back in 2011.

I knew I was going to be traveling to Las Vegas and wanted to do some sort of Vegasy self portrait.  I had pre-planned this photo down to every detail so that it wouldn't take as long to complete in person. I end up standing along the strip at one of the entrances to the hotel and casino.  While taking the photos,  people were looking and we joked I could have put a tip can out and made money that day.

As far as the editing for this photo, I did not wear stone make up. I created the stone effects in Photoshop using various photos I took around the area of stone, marble and cement and created a layered effect until I felt I looked enough like a stone statue outside of Caesar's Palace.

Hula Girl

Hula Girl
"Life is good at the Beach...."

Here is a fun photo I took back on December 31, 2011. I have never shared this photo as it was going to be used for a title page for a book I started to write back in 2012/13. This is actually a crop as the original photo had more to the right side for the title of the book.

This photo was taken on a freezing December day on the Oregon Coast and many people were wondering what I was doing.

Eat Grapes, Be Merry

Eat Grapes, Be Merry
"Grapes are the most noble and challenging of fruits" -

Thought I would show a photo I took back in May while on a cruise to Alaska.  We had a suite that had access to a part of the ship where there was this big bed and everything was fancy. I ended with throwing this self portrait together with the help of our Butler one afternoon at Sea.

I always like to do a self portrait while on vacation. I find it fun to use the travel to either use a different location or think outside the box.

Here is my week 4 video that goes a little more in depth with this topic.

Good vs. Evil

Good vs. Evil
"We've all got both Light and Dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that's who we really are." - JK Rowing

This is actually a recreation on another self portrait I did back in 2013. I do have plans to rework some of my older work, but in some cases the reediting is more then just using a different color tone or adding one additional thing. Sometimes I will be reworking entire pieces to the point they become a new creation.

With this piece I took two elements I had already created and put them together in a different way. To me this creates an entirely new portrait.

Watch the below video for more info and to see the original 2013 photo.

I hope you enjoy!

Video:
And I promise the video quality will get better, I had to do these last two videos quickly to get this project going on time.

Enjoy your week!
